Evidence based research into adverse effects of Ayush drugs is needed for global acceptance: Prof Rabinarayan Acharya Our Bureau, Chennai

For the global acceptance of the traditional medicines of ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homoeopathy (Ayush systems), an evidence based research into the adverse effects of the drugs has to be made. It is becoming an urgent need today, according to professor Rabinarayan Acharya of Gujarat Ayurved University.

He was inaugurating a national seminar on ‘pharmacovigilance of Ayush drugs’ organised by the Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai in association with Society for Ethnopharmacology at the university campus.

Ayush drugs should also have clear labels of their content and adverse reactions, he added.

Dr. Pulok K. Mukherjee, director of the School of Natural Product Studies, Jadhavpur University, Kolkata called for collaborations among Ayush manufacturers, government bodies, academia and research institutions to study and establish the side effects. Jadhavpur University and Sri Ramachandra University will shortly sign an MOU for joint research, he said.

The dean of SRU, Dr. S.P. Thyagarajan said to allay international fears about the safety of Ayush drugs, pharmacovigilance should be included in the curriculum. Similarly, studies should be conducted in Ayush drug safety, adverse reactions and events should be recorded and researched. Ayush drug information services should be made available for all the stakeholders of the systems.

More than 600 delegates from all over the country participated in the seminar. Dr. T.K. Parthasarathy, chief advisor, Dr. S. Anandan, dean, Medical College, Dr. D. Chamundeeswari, principal, faculty of pharmacy, Sri Ramachandra University were among those who participated in the event.
