Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda announced his ministry’s cooperation to set up an offsite medical centre of the Jawaharlal Institute of Post graduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) at Karaikal at the convocation of the institute held on Thursday. Mr. Nadda said that the government was committed to addressing the paucity of doctors and medical personnel, and said that in districts which do not have medical colleges, district hospitals would be upgraded to medical colleges. This would result in the addition of around 100 medical colleges in two phases. “There is regional imbalance in presence of medical colleges in the country. Over 400 districts do not have medical colleges,” he said. There was a shortage of around 14 lakh doctors, and that present doctor to patient ratio was 1:1674, while the optimal ratio according to the WHO is 1: 1000, he said. Mr. Nadda also acknowledged the shortage in specialised care, and appreciated JIPMER’s initiative in conducting short term specialist courses. On medical education, Mr. Nadda said, “JIPMER is expected to take the lead in curriculum development.” Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said that JIPMER is Puducherry’s pride, and appealed to the graduates to serve in rural areas. In his address, Mr. Rangasamy had raised the need for a JIPMER branch in Karaikal, which received a positive response from Mr. Nadda. Dr. M.K. Bhan, President, JIPMER, said that India was going through a moment of transition in healthcare. He requested Mr. Nadda to consider the possibility of a second campus of JIPMER, where experimental undergraduate course (MBBS) could be taught. He also stressed upon the challenges faced by medical colleges like JIPMER in recruiting specialists and super specialists. Dr. S.C. Parija, Director, said that this was the sixth convocation of JIPMER since it was declared an Institute of National Importance. A total of 418 graduates received their degrees in Ph.D., MBBS, M.S., M.Sc., Post Doctoral Fellowship, M.Ch., D.M., M.D., and Post Basic Diploma Courses in Nursing.
