LifeStyleHealth & Diet Chronic Stress And Depression Can Shorten Lifespan, Particularly Women Abhishek Chaudhary | California (US)
Not always a visit to the doctor is necessary to know that you are suffering from stress disorder, but not many people know that stress can kill. A new study has found a new possible link between stress and ageing. The study claims that women suffering from chronic stress have lower level of ‘Klotho‘ whereas women with higher level of ‘klotho‘ have low stress. Chronic stress has always been linked with a heart diseases, diabetes, cancer and mental illness, but the general perception was that stress would not affect an individuals lifespan. But scientists from the University of California have discovered a link between chronic stress, lower level of klotho and lifespan. Klotho performs a wide variety of functions in the body.Lead author of the paper Aric Prather said that “Our results suggest that klotho, which we now know is very important to health, could be a link between chronic stress and premature disease and death,†adding that since the study is observational, they cannot say that chronic stress directly caused lower klotho levels, but the new connection opens avenues of research that converge upon aging, mental health, and age-related diseases. In previous researches conducted on mice and worms, scientist had found that lower level of klotho promoted ageing including Alzheimer’s disease. Klotho is known to decline with age, but in the study even young women with stress were found to have a declined level of klotho. The researchers are now trying to find out what affect higher level of klotho has on the mind and body health, particularly with aging women.
