The World No Tobacco Day was marked by special talks and awareness programme on the ill-effects of tobacco consumption, in the city on Sunday. Anti-Tobacco Forum convener Vasanthkumar Mysoremath spoke on illicit trade of tobacco products and how the industry was hand in glove with such trading practices. At a workshop held at JSS Medical Hospital campus, he said strategies were imperative to curb illicit trade and also reduce tobacco cultivation, production and sale. Report smoking incidents in public Deputy Commissioner of Police H.T. Shekar, who inaugurated the workshop, urged the youth to desist from vices like smoking, drugs, and alcohol. He also highlighted how the strict implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) had brought smoking in public places under control. Dr. Shekar directed the people to be vigilant and report any COTPA violations by calling 100. Mahesh, Reader, gave a talk on the genesis of tobacco, and highlighted its ill-effects. At another event in a shopping mall, students and members of the Institute of Public Health and the Anti-Tobacco Forum conducted an awareness programme. Volunteers also visited the vegetable market and enacted skits to educate the public. The Anti-Tobacco Forum, in a release, said most unbranded smoke and non-smoke tobacco products were flowing into India through the Myanmaar, Bangladesh, China, Nepal and Pakistan.
