Mauritius: Ayush's Capability to Interact With Modern Medicine Highlighted By President of the Republic
'AYUSH is in essence a way of life, a philosophy and a science of healing and health care and good hygiene. The beauty and vitality of AYUSH is that it has the inherent capability to interact with and complement other disciplines, including allopathic or modern medicine', said the President of the Republic, Dr Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, today at the State House, Le Réduit.
The President was speaking at the opening ceremony of an International (Regional) Conference on AYUSH (Ayurveda and Naturopathy, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy). The two-day event is organised by the High Commission of India, in collaboration with the Office of the President of the Republic of Mauritius, the Indian Ministry of AYUSH, and the Mauritian Ministry of Health and Quality of Life.
In her speech, President Gurib-Fakim said that scientific and technological progress makes it possible to cross new frontiers in efforts to develop and promote the benefits of AYUSH and traditional medicines in an era where there is a resurgence of traditional medicine around the world today. Presently, if India has achieved developmental health indices that are by far comparable to the advanced economies of the world, that is because AYUSH, and more particularly, Ayurveda has played a significant part in the achievement of such benefits, she pointed out.
For his part, the Minister of State for AYUSH, Government of India, Mr Shripad Yesso Naik, observed that the principles and practices of AYUSH systems, which are much beyond the science of life, are generating interest in many countries and India has signed Memoranda of Understanding to set up Academic Chairs in various foreign Universities. 'We are open to establish such educational Chair in Mauritius also and look forward to further strengthen ties between India and Mauritius', he said.
In his address, the Minister of Health and Quality of Life, Mr Anil Kumarsingh Gayan, spoke about the importance for traditional medicine to follow the same route as conventional western medicine in terms of independent investigation, scrutiny, research, clinical trials and system of peer review. He stated that AYUSH has a great deal going for it in the modern age and that its future is bright as not only can it make scientific sense but it can also make fabulous business sense.
