Luxettipet (Adilabad): Lack of emphasis on the implementation of the National Rural Health Mission (NHM) scheme through AYUSH dispensaries seems to have defeated its very purpose in Luxettipet and Dandepally mandals of the district. Four Unani dispensaries were opened in the two mandals way back in 2008 under the NHM. 

• No regular staff and  permanent buildings  
• Quality medicare still a distant dream for rural poor  

Though the dispensary is located on the premises of the government hospital in the mandal headquarters, very few people know about it. There is only one staffer to run the dispensary and perform all the functions. No one knows when the lone staffer visits it. No medicines are available in the dispensary. Patients visiting the dispensary are forced to return home disappointed because of its poor functioning. There is another Unani dispensary at the Primary Health Centre at Venkatraopet village in Luxettipet mandal. The dispensary functioned well initially. The functioning of the dispensary was affected gradually due to official apathy. Though a permanent building was constructed for the dispensary, it was not inaugurated. Regular staff members were not appointed to run the dispensary on sound lines, said medical officer Shahena Begum who is working on contract basis. Same is the case with the Unani dispensary at Tallapet village in Dandepally mandal. Each of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems of medicine has its own merits. The Indian system of medicine pales into insignificance before the popularity of allopathy due to lack of promotion about its effectiveness in curing chronic ailments and common disorders. Speaking to The Hans India on Friday, Chella Nagabhushanam, advocate and former Agricultural Marketing Committee chairman, deplored the poor implementation of the NHM. “There is a need to provide quality medicare to the rural poor through the Indian systems of medicine, which are highly effective in curing several chronic ailments without any adverse side effects. AYUSH dispensaries set up as part of the NHM should be strengthened to realise the goal of health for all,” he said.
